Y is for you! Yes, you. You could become disabled at any time in your life. With long COVID, there are lasting health effects that may render a whole new group disabled.
I know it sounds scary, but that’s why YOU need to fight for accessibility now. It could be you, your kids, your spouse, your blood family member, or chosen family member, all of these things have to do with you, yes. You.
What’s the best way to prepare? To fight for change now. Always observe accessible parking signs, even if you’re “Just running in real quick” to the bank. Vote for changes in accessible rights, healthcare, and preventative care. Get involved with local politics to ask for better sidewalks and curb cuts, for resources for your houseless neighbors (who are VERY likely disabled: more than 40% are. Can you see homelessness through a different causatory lens now?), and take the time to learn about how others experience the world.
Be careful of ableist language and be willing to learn something new. You can do this. I’m counting on you. <3
